Today’s Look 2.012

31 05 2012

It’s that time of the year again when the city is flooded with gifts and goodies, when people’s profile pictures are of them wearing caps and gowns, when flower shops start making almost as much money as on Valentines. Yes ladies and gentleman, another class is graduating.

For me it’s a little bit of a bitter sweet moment, because it’s kind of a reminder of where you once were, merely x years ago. It’s a good reminiscing moment to see how far you’ve come since you yourself threw your cap in the air and thought that you are about to make your mark in this world. How many years has it been for you, and how far do you think you have come since?

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending one of the ceremonies at my Alma Mater and it was a little odd. As the speakers try to inspire you and motivate you, gushing over how you are in good companies and how the school has prepared you well, part of me was so touched to be back there again and reminisce of old time, but part of me also wanted to shake them and tell them not to give the graduates some unrealistic expectations. Don’t get me wrong new graduates, you can be great, you can make your marks, but at the same time, it really is what you make of it.

Now, enough about the dark and gloomy thoughts, this is a fashion post! I thought I would share with you what I decided to wear on this joyous occasion.   Remember that if you are the guest, don’t try to overshine the star!

Today's Look 2.012

As blue and gold are our school colours, I tried to show my loyalty to school this way! My navy blue dress was 3/4 sleeves with slits. Unlike the one shown here though, my “slit” wasn’t one big one, but looked more like a ladder with several smaller key holes, if you know what I mean. I paired it with simple black sandal heels, and my Burberry trench because it was kind of gloomy and cold.
.
I kept my accessories simple with gold chain pendant and gold bangles. The only pops of playful colour were my mint green nails and blue green shadows. My dear friend who graduated was wearing a flowy sleeveless dress that was long at the back, but shorter in the front which was to die for! I really think she was the best dressed there and I am not being biased!
Something like this.. but she had a huge belt for a more flattering silhouette. If you are lost as to what to wear to weddings/grads/other semi formal occasion this summer, hopefully this will inspire you!
 .
Again, congratulations class of 2012, and I wish you nothing but the best. Just don’t take my job away :D

Salted Hazelnut Gelato.

29 05 2012

I once wrote a post on two of the world’s most amazing ice cream flavours here, and I am proud to say that I have found one more to join the club. If you have never tried these three flavours before, I would suggest you to go find them pronto. Make it yourself if you have to!!

It was slightly on the more expensive side, with one small cup (mine, on the right hand side) costed about the same as Grande Frappucino from Starbucks (that’s the middle sized Frappucino, for those of you who only order tall, like me!). At first I thought that maybe it was this good because it was that pricey, but after trying three different flavours from the store (they limit us to three; I went with salted caramel (of course), earl grey, and salted hazelnut) salted hazelnut was still the clear winner, so I assure you that this flavour is a definite must try.

I wouldn’t describe it as salty, but the salt added that much depth in to the hazelnut flavour, making sure that it was not just sweet Nutella or Hedgehog. I’ve tried hazelnut flavour before, and the salt really does make a HUGE difference. It was nutty, with bits of real hazelnut in it so you know it’s naturally flavoured, and not artificial syrup or whatever. As you can tell in the picture, I stuck to one flavour and one flavour only and I cleaned mine up pretty quickly though I could still eat some more, that’s how good it was.

If you were wondering, the two flavours of my friend’s choice was rose water, and espresso. I only tried the rose water one because it’s so unheard of. It tasted lightly sweet, and a little exotic with middle eastern flare. I think they had some spice in it too.

Salted caramel, roasted marshmallow, and now salted caramel.. I am curious to see what would be the next amazing flavours that will be added to my hall of fame! If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear it!

Sh*t people say on Facebook status.

23 05 2012

The first thing I do when I log on to facebook is check my newsfeed, even before I check my own notifications and private messages. It’s like skimming through your morning newspaper, you know? Checking out what people are up to especially when your friends and families are spread out all over the globe. I’m not going to lie, some of the most interesting links I find are through here, but it’s also true that the most annoying statuses get mixed up in here too…. To name a few,

those annoying passive aggressive messages:

UNBELIEVABLE. All I have given you is love and respect this past year and all I have gotten back was LIES. I know I should’ve seen it coming, I know I shouldn’t have given you my heart.. I hope she was worth it.

So you’re upset? But you can’t tell it to their faces? So you have to broadcast it on facebook what you would say to the person, because you can only whine about it “secretly”… It’s definitely a cry of help, I just don’t quite understand why it has to be up in public, especially when you could kind of tell who you’re attacking and what they possibly did. Not cool.

Similarly annoying,

those sad/angry statuses that are clearly attention seeking but they refuse to tell anyone what’s wrong even when people ask.

If you don’t want to talk about it, why post it as your status?

those people that are trying too hard to sound pensive, quoting themselves:

This was posted by Cookie Monster **name has been changed:

“Somethings you just need to do once and you will remember (i.e. mistakes).” – Cookie Monster.

Not only did this “Cookie Monster” put a quotation mark on his own quote, he even made sure he signed his own name at the end to make sure everybody knows that this is his quote. What annoys me even more is that sometimes, his quote is just a paraphrase of what other famous person has said few decades ago, but oh no, he still signed his own name at the end. Oh jolly, he even gave us an example so we can better understand what he means!

those that needs to let the whole world know of their daily activities:

Just woke up from a nap. Time for hot shower, lunch, then off to work!

…and exactly what do you plan on achieving by sharing with us the most routine things about life? And word of advice girls, anything that has to do with you undressing, keep it to yourself. One time, I tried to stop a text conversation with a guy telling him imma head to shower, ttul, he responded with “oooh, you just got me excited!”. Um, NOT what I was trying to do dude. So, shower, trying on bikinis, purchasing lingerie, you might want to avoid anyone trying to fantasize you doing it.

Yes, what he said.

I understand that you’re extremely excited about the weather, but what’s next?

SUNNNN!!!!!

Rain, boo :(

New toothbrush <3

Just waxed my butt!

..You get my point..

those statuses with bad grammar and tons of spelling mistakes.

y socialcam gets hit??
i’m so curious
this shows the power of social network thingy
it also means tht ppl dnt want some privacy anymore rite??

I know my own English is not perfect, but at least I’m not trashing the language.  I have some friends who are still trying to master the language, and for some reason they insist on writing their paragraph long statuses in English. Points for trying, because practice makes perfect, but for your own sake, stick to the language that you are comfortable with.

And while we’re at it, if your English is THAT bad, don’t even think about insulting other people’s English. This is the real image that the same friend posted one time, and her caption was “their English is so bad it gives me headache. I want to fix it for them so bad!”.

Yes darlin’, it’s bad, but you’re the one to talk..?

those overly detailed statuses on your illness every fricken hour.

Yes, one time my friend updated us every hour on her pus squirting skin irritation. TOO. MUCH. INFORMATION. All we need to know is that you’re okay.

Feel free to share what gets on your nerve on facebook!

Wheat Free Journey Part IV.

22 05 2012

It is no secret that I like to eat. I enjoy good food, I love cooking, and I love exploring cool places to wine and dine. If you are visiting a certain city that I am familiar with and you ask me what are some of the things to do here, 9 out of 10 times, I would mention what they must eat, before anything else.

But recently I have had a realization that it is about time I start paying attention to my health as well. While my decision to partake in my wheat free journey was more of me accepting a challenge to prove my boyfriend wrong, it really has helped me eat better, despite how many times I cheat, just because I’m more aware of what I’m consuyming. My current wheat free favourite? It is one of the easiest meal you could prepare, one of the healthiest, and definitely, one of the item on the menu that you will keep coming back to this summer!

If I have it my way, smoothies would be my go-to dinner most nights of the week, especially on the nights that I don’t exercise. What I put in them is completely random, based on what is available but here are some of my favourite ingredients:

They just make any smoothies, because of its subtle, yet sweet touch, and its creamy consistency. It just goes with absolutely everything. The problem though? I have to wait for it to ripe first, and since my boyfriend can enjoy his bananas green, he barely leaves any for me. I guess when you snooze, you lose!

Any type of yoghurt (though I prefer vanilla), is a good substitution for when my bananas are not ripe enough, or when my other half finishes it before it ripens. Same idea, they are sweet, with good consistency, extra calcium, and still easy on your body.

Okay, this is a weird one, but a handful of baby spinach is kind of magical. It adds that much more nutrient, gives some depth to the flavour (you really can’t taste the spinach), and it turns anything in to my favourite colour! Gosh, I sure hope my future kids will appreciate the beauty of anything green like me.

Milk is my choice of liquid for when making smoothies. Soy, Skim, 1%, anything goes, and I would love to try almond milk too. I’m a little against using water.. And since I use frozen fruits most of the time, I don’t even need that extra ice!

Other than that, I just put in whatever types of fruit I find in the fridge or the freezer, usually a mix of berries, mangoes, or peaches. I have once tried using chopped Granny Smith apple as the main fruit, and I was surprised by how well it blended! I wasn’t a big fan of its consistency though, it was somewhat grainy (hehe, get it?). The two ingredients that I would love to try right now is matcha powder, and soft tofu!! Okay, maybe the soft tofu might be a little weird, but don’t you think it could work?? And maybe oatmeal. Apparently it’s quite common to mix oatmeal in to smoothies now?

There is so much beauty in seeing so many layers of fruits in your blender, don’t you think?

Did I also mention how you absolutely don’t need any extra sweeteners? Not even after you add a handful of green leafy spinach! A lot of people put extra seeds or powders in it, but I like mine au naturale. Yum.

Never Gets Old.

I’m glad these were the characters I grew up with.

Home Alone – dolling up edition.

13 05 2012

What do you do when you have your place all to yourself for few days?

I woke up this morning with three and a half pairs of socks tangled around my head. Yes, you read that right, last night I went to bed with my hair stuffed in socks.

Odd, I know, there is just something about having socks in your hair that made me feel uneasy too.. I mean, these are what goes on my feet… Clean or not, I feel like on my head is not really where they belong. That is until I read online that you can curl your hair using your socks, and no heat! I love curling my hair, but most of you with long and thick hair would agree that it can take too much of your time to curl it, and it’s even more frustrating because they don’t necessarily last all day..  Not to mention that the heat is very damaging to your hair, despite the use of heat protection spray. So when I read about this method, I realized that I had to try this no matter how weird sharing my pillow with my socks would be.

How this works is basically like the old-fashioned hair rolling method. Those guys that used to curl people’s hair way before hair irons and curlers came along:

You can still find them in stores today, but just in case you’re not familiar with them, you fasten your hair around them, wait a few hours (or in my case, sleep on it) and voila, when you wake up your hair just went from straight to curly! Same goes with using your socks.. First make sure your hair is damp, and decide how many socks you want to use. The more socks you use, the smaller and the tighter the curls. As I have mentioned, I have long and thick hair so I ended up using 7 socks last night and I woke up with my hair a little too curly for my liking.  If you decide to go with as little socks as possible, just make sure that your hair is not too tight in your sock(s). For my next try, I am going to aim for 4 socks!

I turned my socks inside out, just because I felt that the inside of the socks would be less rough on my hair than the outside, but that’s up to you. Roll your hair around the socks, depending on where you want your curls to start – I started mine just below my ears. Once the hair surrounds the sock to your liking, wrap the whole thing up in to a ball of sock, just the way you would before you chuck your socks in to your sock drawer. Repeat until your entire locks are replaced by a few balls of socks. Another good thing about using socks instead of rollers are that it’s much easier on your head to sleep on, than the plastic rollers. In the morning, if your hair turns out curlier than how you like it, simply dampen your hair slightly or brush it out. What I like about the curls done with rollers/socks is how long lasting they are and how they use a lot less products so your hair looks less made up and covered in products.

Without heat or mousse/gel/wax/other products, you can get these really effortless soft curls! Let me know how it turns out if you decide to try this method!

What other ridiculous looking things would you do, when your significant other is away on a business trip? Well, other than sleeping with balls of socks, I have also been walking around the apartment with damp socks, stuffed in my gorgeous heels. I have been trying to break these heels for a while, and I recently read that damp socks speed up the process! Stay tune for the update of whether it actually works or not!

And finally, playing dress up! With my man’s shirt (I did get his permission first for the record :P) I first saw the tutorial of how to turn men’s shirts in to a mini dress, but I didn’t actually think it would be simple enough to try it out myself until I saw it being featured on Minty & Peaches’s blog here! What do you guys think? I actually think it’s a really cute look (come on, I was so in to it that I even accessorized!) but I don’t know if I would actually wear this out.. Could you tell that I am actually wearing a man’s shirt here (minus the pocket and the logo on it)? Would you wear this out?

To Do List (feat. Pinterest)

8 05 2012

A whole new level to the melted crayon art! Would this be too colourful for men’s liking?

“Write love letters to each other and place into a box along with a bottle of wine.nail it shut at the wedding. When you have your first fight, open it up, pour the wine, go to separate corners, read the love letter & remember what it’s all about….”

Far far farrrr in to the future, but I definitely would love to do this!

I’m curious to see how well my long, thick mane would work in to this! Full tutorial by Keiko here.

You know you are growing up when you start putting in some real effort in decorating your space.

Pinterest has been taking so much of my time lately I think it’s about time I join it.. Who is your favourite followee?
