Birthday Wish.

27 02 2012

My twenty-something birthday is coming up in a few days, and I don’t quite know how I should be feeling. Usually the first few months of the year is my favourite time of the year, with Valentines, my birthday, my anniversary, and the blooming flowers, with summer just few months away. But this year, I’m not quite feeling it, at least not yet. I haven’t even made up my mind on how to celebrate it yet! So to get myself in to the spirit, I made some wish list which usually is the sign of materialistic self absorption, but since I’m not actually giving it to my friends and family, I think it makes me only a little materialistically self absorbed.

Birthday Wishes.

– a simple, but really beautiful tank top tunic. I think this is a must-have item in our closets that are usually overlooked because of its simplicity. Don’t get it confused with wife beaters, because while it is comfortable, they are not too versatile. If the material is beautiful, and it fits right on your body, I think this tank top tunic has so much potential. I can see myself wearing this with leggings, a blazer, and some really fancy necklace all the time. I can even wear it to work because the material is fancy enough for business occasions!

– a super comfortable pair of flats in the prettiest colour of the rainbow. If you have been reading my posts, you will know how crazy I am about this, and I have yet to find them and purchase them. Since I moved, I actually have zero pairs of flats with me. And as many sandals. So whenever I need to step out of the apartment briefly with no socks on, my only option is to wear my heels. Or my runners with no socks, like we’re back in the 1950s… So yes, I need flats.

– a high waisted pair of shorts in pretty colours, including black. It’s a cute look, and I can still wear my boots with them! (Did you know that was the reason I don’t wear as many jeans? Because its cold, and I need my boots to warm me up, but the jeans inside boots look is not really for me because my calves are huge). SO owning more of high waisted pair of shorts would give me a more varied look, without taking away my warmth!

– a long sleeve, short flowy dress. This is currently my favourite look, inspired by Kourtney Kardashian. I’m a sucker for boyfriend look to begin with (like boyfriend sweater, or boyfriend shirts), and this is a more sophisticated, more feminine version of that, while still being extremely comfortable. It’s sexy in a playful, classy way, and it’s so versatile because I can wear it out, or to work. I just wish I can find more of it!

– a pair of sexy heels with toe caps. I honestly have no idea what the function of toe caps are, but I like how it looks. Having the toe cap in metallic like the one here adds that futuristic feel to it, without making it look out of place.

– a colourful purse, mayyyyybe a satchel. I used to be a sucker for a pop of colour in my look (seriously, I used to take my yellow Kenneth Cole with me everywhere, and I mean everywhere!) but since I invested in some brand name bags, I started playing safe because I wanted them to be timeless, but I really miss my pop of colours!! I’m thinking either red, or again, yellow.

– a shooting star. I could really use a wish right now… And I wouldn’t mind getting that necklace too.

I’ve Got Your Number.

25 02 2012

The last time I read a whole book in a day was back in college; one of those last minute literature class cramming session. Fine, it wasn’t even reading, it was more of skimming.. and honestly I barely remember the name of the book, let alone what it was about. But the last time I actually read leisurely the whole book in a day, must have been back when I was in middle school… the Naughtiest Girl series by Enid Blyton (it’s actually really innocent you guys, get you mind out of the gutter!). Sure, I have read some really really great books since then, but never  in one sitting, so I think that this book I’m about to share with you is pretty special. And yes, I have realized that the reason I haven’t finished a book in one sitting since my middle school days could possibly be related to how I don’t have as much free time anymore, but that’s beside the point. Or maybe middle school books were really short?

I don’t want to give too much away since I do think that this book is fairly new, so most people might not have had the chance to read it yet, and I wouldn’t want to spoil it. I’m not exactly the follower of Sophie Kinsella (never read the Shopaholic series…) but it was new, it was all over the book store, so I gave it a try. Definitely a fun read, and for what it’s worth, I finished this book before I finished my pack of Digestive cookies, which I was munching on as I read this. And those cookies were really good too – crunchy oat and whole wheat biscuits with dark chocolate coating.

One of the guys in the book reminded me a lot of my ex boyfriend, so that was a bit of a turn off, although I’m sure the guy in the book is supposed to be much better looking. A work oriented guy who focuses more on his duty, more than people’s feelings.. Extremely arrogant (you’ll know what I mean when you read it, ESPECIALLY at the ending), and think he is somehow more entitled than other people, treating them like crap *shudders*. But other than it was good. If you are looking for a light read, I would highly recommend it.

And judging from my last post, you know I don’t recommend anything lightly!

Let’s Rate Everything.

23 02 2012

They say lists always make you feel better, and think better. Hopefully you’ll find this list of mine somewhat useful. Believe me, since I have discovered the joy of reviews that you can find on internet, I almost don’t buy anything now without consulting my internet first. Although I am sure many things, are just personal preferences.

Note: unless i specifically mention the brand, most of these are just opinions on the product as a whole, not as a personal attack to any brand.

1. Whole wheat pasta

I actually like most things that are better for your health, like brown rice, or whole grain bread, but whole wheat pasta, I just cannot do. They taste different, in a bad way, like cardboard, no matter what brand! I could make the best sauce in the world, but I don’t think any of them has ever made a difference to the cardboard taste of whole wheat pasta. Though if you really must treat yourself to whole wheat pasta, I have found whole wheat penne to be better than the spaghetti. In my book, they get about a C grade.

2. Hair bun maker

Are any of you familiar with this? Basically it can help your hair go from sleek pony tail to a perfect bun, without hair pin, hair net, or anything that makes your bun look unnatural. I was first introduced to this when my GM came in one day with the most beautiful curled hair. She let out her secret, and it was these babies that gave her those curls! Unfortunately my curls from them was not as pretty, hell it was actually terrible, like 10x worse than my bad hair day, so I guess you need specific type of hair for it to make pretty curls. I give it an A for hair bun, but a D for curling hair. Mind you, they only make pretty buns though, not Parisian buns.

3. Bridesmaid

First off, let me be clear that I’m not a movie person to begin with, and that this movie got a 3.5 stars review. Ya, I didn’t like it, especially after such a high reviews I got from everyone else. The plots just weren’t doing it for me, it was all over the place, and I just couldn’t feel it emotionally. Like when the bride went missing, and as a best friend, instead of checking all the places she could possibly be, she spent her afternoon trying to get the attention from a cop… Come on now, you don’t deserve to be her maid of honour if you don’t know where your bride has disappeared to. I would give it a C-.

4. Nestle’s Sundae – Caramel and Pecan

Ahmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing.. They really are. Their vanilla ice cream is so creamy like soft serve, and not like the packaged ice cream you get in stores, their caramel matches perfectly with the ice cream, and the crunchy pecans just raise this dessert to a whole new level. They really are better than the sundaes you get at ice cream parlour, and the fact that you can have this at your own home, is such a privilege. Definitely an A+ stuff!

5. Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioning Cream

My hair in general is okay, but I still want to make the effort for it to look better, especially at the tips. I have tried a lot of hair masks or slightly pricier hair treatment products, and none of them really made a difference for me, so I thought I should go for leave-in serum. I ended up getting this leave-in conditioner instead because it was on sale, so I gave it a try. At first, I hated it. The reason I wanted serum was because it gives that sleek finishes, but this conditioner is really obvious in your hair, it looks dry, it looks rough and it really wasn’t doing much to make my hair look healthier. But now, after like a month of using it, it’s starting to show some improvements. The secret people, is to sleep on it. I wouldn’t buy it again though. This is around a B- grade product, you really can’t beat the price!

6. New Girl

I was so excited for this show when I saw the trailer! And I really enjoyed like, the first two episodes… I’m sorry, I really wanted it to be yet another one of the shows I look forward to each week, but it didn’t do it for me.. It was slightly off, I know it’s supposed to be all cute and quirky, but it’s getting too eccentric with a lot of awkward silences where they actually expect you to laugh. I say, this is a C grade show.

7. Big Eyes Contacts

No, just no. Especially those people that wear it daily, and convince themselves and everyone else in their lives that this is their natural look, absolutely not. Okay the truth is, it is their choice, if they are so unhappy with the way they look and have to rely on these contact lenses, then I’m not going to tell them they shouldn’t. It is just my humble opinion that it is not the most attractive look, nor is it the most natural look. An F for the use of this product, although I sure love this picture I found online.

8. Knorr Pasta Sauce Mix – Carbonara

I don’t give them enough credits, seriously. You know how in TV commercials, they claim that they don’t make it from scratch because packet ones are just better? Now, more often than not, that is not the case, EXCEPT WITH THIS! I kid you not, I would buy these, hide them, make them, and get creative with disposing the empty packets, because I don’t want anyone to know that my famous carbonara is actually from a packet. I mix some fresh ingredients to it yes, but honestly, I give them 99.9% of the credit. In my head that is. Take an A+, you unsung hero.

9. I hope they serve beer in hell

My bedtime story for the past few weeks. Hilarious, slightly disturbing, but a fun read that’s for sure. It is like Sex and City, from a man’s perspective with lots of uncalled for details. Not much substance, but if you are looking for a casual book to read so you don’t have to think about all the stressful stuff in real world, this is the book for you. I’m enjoying it, but would I re-read it? Most likely not, so that makes it about a B+ book.

I like number 9, so I’ll just end it here. This must be longest post I have ever written!

Big Boss is Near.

21 02 2012

I don’t know if anyone cares about the continuation of my “important piece of writing” that I mentioned in the last post, but I feel the need to update.

Imagine Mario, yes, that height-challenged Italian plumber who likes to ride dinosaur, that Mario. You pass a stage, feel like the good kind of ending is near, but you were attacked, but you managed to score that 1-up mushroom just in time. Now you’re still alive, though extremely exhausted and feeling helpless, and you are about to face the big boss. *cue in scary music* Intense huh.

This is when I would pause the game, distract myself a little so the real me could prepare myself emotionally to control Mario via super nintendo or PS3 or whatever it is that kids play these days. The difference though, is that I can pause that game for a decade if I wanted to, and it will still be there, ready to fight. Unfortunately in reality I can only distract myself for so long before reality kicks in. I just have to remember that being early sometimes could be almost as bad as being late. I just have to plan wisely and strategize. More often than not, you really only just get one chance.

At least I can honestly say that I don’t regret anything that I have done thus far.

My first draft went a little like this!

17 02 2012

Actually, I don’t know if I practice what I preach. If you go back and look at some of my posts, I clearly wrote it when a storm was just starting in my head. But that’s different, this is my blog, and I think I started it in the first place because I needed a channel to vent. When it comes to important writing though, I try to be as emotionally stable as I can given the situation, because when you put too much emotion in to it, the readers will either love it, or hate it, and that is the kind of risk I am not going to take right now.

Unless you are doing a literature analysis, that is, then maybe it is good you are crying as you write it. I remember for the longest paper I ever had to write during my undergrad degree, I just went through my first ever heartbreak, and that is simply what I wrote about. It was a literature class on women’s self writing, so it wasn’t too too hard for me to incorporate heartbreaks in to it. I was even listening to those sappy music the whole time I was writing this 20 pages paper. And if you are wondering, yes, I was extremely happy with the finished product, so much that I might one day publish it. I even wanted to note on my title page to my professor that the theme song of this paper is Happy Ending by Mika.

And yes, this is my first draft for my so called important piece of writing. You know how some actors do those acting exercises before they go on stage, to get rid of their excess nerves and emotions? Something like that.

So I know Valentine’s is so 3 days ago, but I have been playing this non-stop. Really, I think this made my valentines.

Happy Valentine’s!

14 02 2012

I know this is not the typical Valentine’s post, but I figured you all have seen, and will continue to see more of the usual Valentine’s messages and images on this day. So this is a little bit of me sharing my love for you all, with the very best wishes not only for today, but also for the remaining every other day for the rest of this year.

Maybe it’ll be a light year, maybe it’s going to be a tough one, but we are all going to be okay, right? The best is yet to come.

Have a great one you guys!

I made sure to sneak a little bit of Valentine’s something in to my boyfriend’s luggage this afternoon before he took off, although not discreetly at all. If you haven’t tried truffle almonds yet, you are missing out my friend. Go find some. Now!

For when they’re not here.

The ‘roly poly’, designed by the design incubation centre at the National University of Singapore, are a pair of egg-like objects that mirror each other’s movements, even when physically separated. two people thus can sense each other’s presence despite distances across the world: a tap of one half will create a simultaneous reaction in the other.
